In a two-hour candid conversation with Oprah on CBS and ITV, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry detailed the challenges they faced as a married couple working within the Royal Family. There were many shocking allegations and revelations, but one tidbit which flew under the radar was Meghan’s revelation that she knew Princess Eugenie before meeting Harry.

Oprah asked Meghan how she felt on the day she first met the Queen, which happened when the Queen dropped in unexpectedly at Royal Lodge, where Princess Eugenie’s family live.

Meghan said: “We were going for lunch at Royal Lodge, which is where some other members of the family live, specifically Andrew and Fergie, and Eugenie and Beatrice would spend a lot of time there.

“Eugenie and I had known each other before I knew Harry, so that was comfortable.”

This was unexpected news, with most in the know assuming Meghan and Eugenie met through Harry as the cousins are known to be close.

So how did Meghan and Eugenie meet?

The details of how Meghan and Eugenie met before Meghan met Harry aren’t known.

However, it is assumed they were introduced by the same mutual friend who eventually set Meghan and Harry up.

During the couple’s first public interview after their engagement, they said they wanted to keep the identity of their cupid a secret to protect her privacy.

There has been much speculation, however, that it was the fashion designer Mischa Nonoo.

Mischa and Eugenie are also friends, with Eugenie often seen at her fashion shows over the years and Mishca attending Eugenie’s wedding to Jack Brooksbank.

So could Mischa Nonoo be the link between Meghan and all the royals?

However they met, Meghan confirmed they were good friends with Eugenie “as a couple”.

In the early days of Meghan and Harry’s relationship, Eugenie and Jack went on double dates with Harry and Meghan.

They also reportedly visited Toronto, Canada, to see the couple when the prince travelled to see Meghan during her time on Suits.

However, rumours of tensions between the couples emerged after Princess Eugenie and Jack’s October 2018 wedding.

According to insiders, Meghan and Prince Harry shared the news that they were expecting their first child with family and friends on Eugenie’s big day.

The pregnancy was officially announced three days later on the Kensington Palace social media accounts as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex embarked on their royal tour of Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga.

Royal authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand commented on the timing of the announcement in their book Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family.

They said: “It did not go down particularly well with Eugenie, who, a source said, told friends she felt the couple should have waited to share the news.”

However, it appears things have since been smoothed over with the royal cousins, with Eugenie and Jack moving into Frogmore Cottage, the home Meghan and Harry painstakingly renovated before they left the UK.

A source told PEOPLE: “Frogmore Cottage continues to be the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s residence in the UK and they are delighted to be able to open up their home to Princess Eugenie and Jack as they start their own family.”
