Kent Gavin told Channel 5 that in 1982 he had to remind Queen Elizabeth II that her mother needed to get a photo with newly born Prince William in order to have the oldest and youngest members of the monarchy pictured together. The former royal photographer stated that the Queen asked “How did I miss that?” after being informed the picture was not included on the running order.

Mr Gavin said: “On arrival to the palace I was given a list of the running order to which I could expect the photos to take place.

“The first one was Diana and Charles, the only thing was William was crying his eyes out.

“Diana had the solution to that and it was to put her little finger in his mouth.

“Then the Queen and Philip came out and the Queen Mother, they sat down perfectly posed.

“But it was William who was stealing the show obviously because of his crying.

“That was the last photo on the running order and I walked across to the Queen and said ‘excuse me mam but there is one very important picture missing, that is the Queen-mother, the oldest and youngest.’

“And she said ‘goodness me how have we missed that?’

“She called out ‘mother’ and Diana handed William over.”

Princess Diana 'mortified' at William's christening claims expert

Royal commentators Jenny Bond and Richard Kay analysed Prince William’s christening during the same Channel 5 documentary.

Ms Bond said: “Royal christenings are formal occasions, it is a moment of royal history that is going to be relayed for decades.

“He [Prince William] was crying and I think she was mortified by this.

“It was difficult for Diana, it looked excruciatingly embarrassing, she was really flushed.

“Diana and Charles were just trying to make William stop crying.

“It did not look like a very relaxed occasion, I must say.”

Mr Kay added: “It was feeding time for William and it was not a great time for having their photograph taken.

“Diana had to control a young baby who was getting restless.”
