Horse fed Buckfast at tourist attraction by 'completely irresponsible' visitor

A ‘completely irresponsible’ person has been criticised after being caught on camera feeding alcohol to a horse.

The person was filmed pouring Buckfast, a fortified wine, into the horse’s mouth.

The horse lives at Almond Valley Heritage Centre in Livingston, Scotland, and a spokesperson for the centre slammed the visitor’s irresponsible behaviour.

However the centre was closed at the time, with the incident taking place on a public footpath near the horse paddocks.

The centre spokesperson said: ‘This is not OK. We have received an influx of messages tonight of someone (whose name we have removed) giving Buckfast to one of our horses to drink.

‘Completely irresponsible, this could cause serious issues to our gentle giants.

‘We do not allow people to feed our horses, or let them drink Buckfast for a reason, that reason being it could make them terribly ill.’

Dr Robin Chesters, director of Almond Valley Heritage Trust, later told Sky News that no harm came to the horse and accepted it was a ‘silly thoughtless moment’ and the people involved ‘regret’ it.

Dr Chesters added: ‘In this instance, no harm seems to have been caused, but the consequences could have been far more serious for our big, gentle and trusting Clydesdale horses.’

The Scottish SPCA said it hasn’t received any reports in relation to the incident.
