A driver who “had a wee bit to drink” has spent the night in custody after a series of incidents on the A38 at Splatford Split, Devon around 10.30pm on Thursday. The motorist collided with a road closure sign and went on to drive at road workers with his Ford Fiesta. He was then stopped by other maintenance cars. A picture of the scene shared by the Devon and Cornwall Roads Policing Team shows the offending vehicle has “Highway Maintenance” displayed on it.

Police said: “Driver of the Fiesta had a wee bit to drink.

“So much so he collided with the road closure signs on A38 Splatford Split driving at road workers before being blocked by other maintenance cars.

“Driver is spending the night in custody.”

Splatford Split is a major bifurcation of trunk routes where the A380 splits from the A38 to negotiate Telegraph and Holdon Hills respectively.

The crash follows an incident on another major UK road this week.

A lorry ploughed into a bridge on the A30 just outside Exeter in Devon shortly before 7am on Tuesday.

It happened at the junction with the A377 in Alphington.

A Highways spokesman said: “A large tipper truck travelling from the direction of Ide Lane struck the bridge on the roundabout underneath the A30 at around 6.45am.

“We are assisting what is a police-led incident, and an engineer will be assessing the bridge this morning for any potential structural damage.”
