Sources have reportedly confirmed to an Afghan news channel that nine foreigners have been taken by members of the movement which seized power last year. Afghanistan’s former Vice President Amrullah Saleh said on Twitter that nine people from the West, including Mr North, have been kidnapped by the Taliban.

Mr North is believed to have been working for the United Nations in the country at the time of the reported kidnapping.

Mr Saleh tweeted: “Due to no media, no reporting by citizens & a suffocating atmosphere corruption, crime & atrocities aren’t well exposed.

“As an example 9 citizens of western countries hv been kidnapped amongst them Andrew North of BBC & Peter Juvenal owner of Gandomak Restaurant. Talibs r liars.”

An international journalist, the former BBC correspondent has a track record of reporting from conflict zones and extreme environments.

According to his LinkedIn profile, he has worked for the BBC for more than 20 years across the Middle East and Asia.

Now independent, he based himself in Tbilisi, Georgia.

His recent work included reporting on the Afghan conflict, field research in Afghanistan for a UK charity, training journalists and producing large-scale multi-media reports on big theme global stories.

He has featured in the Economist, Foreign Affairs, Politico, Tortoise Media and The Guardian.

“I have extensive global experience and contacts, having worked in more than 60 countries worldwide, across Asia, the Middle East, Europe and North and South America.”
