Holiday hotspot marred by ‘turd towns’ slammed as ‘bleak and sad’
A UK holiday hotspot has gained notoriety after a YouTuber blasted its local “turd towns”. The YouTuber, who goes by the name Turdtowns, has spent months recording Britain’s most run-down communities, and his latest video has settled on the Isle of Wight. In the 15-minute-long vlog, the content creator listed the six worst places he found on the island during his stay earlier this month.
Turdtowns posted his video on May 9 after subscribers voted for him to visit the Isle of Wight.
Writing in the video description, the YouTuber explained that he was “unsure whether it would actually be bad”, given its popularity.
But he was eventually persuaded by people who told him it was “horrible on the island nowadays”.
Of the Isle of Wight’s nine towns, he said six met the turd town criteria, with the worst of the lot being a once thriving seaside community.
Ventnor was the sixth on his list, which, while a “turd town” that is “constantly battling landslips”, is a “place on the up”.
Ryde came fifth, with the creator dubbing the town “shabby” and full of “grimy” terraced homes covered in “dirt, dust and seagull faeces”.
He said the area didn’t seem like a place people would want to visit but credited its high street.
The seaside town of Shanklin, which while not run down, was comparatively bland, and the YouTuber placed it in fourth, questioning why “anyone would ever want to visit”.

Wroxhll, which “sounds like a weeping wart”, took third place as it caused the YouTuber “immense sadness”.
Turdtowns said the community was a “pretty pointless place” with a “surprising” number of derelict buildings.
But even Wroxall was better than the island capital Newport, the second on the list.
While he didn’t find the town as bad as he expected, he said its high crime and poverty rate placed it low down on the list.
The number one turd town on the Isle of Wight, in the creator’s opinion, was Sandown.
Again, he said he felt “sadness” while walking through the community, which was likened to Blackpool in its heyday.
He said the town should be the “best place on the island” but was “depressing, bleak, and sad”.
The YouTuber added that he “lost count of how many boarded-up hotels there were here”.
Turdtowns’ video has gone viral since it was posted on May 9 and racked up more than 60,000 views in just two days.
Now, the video has nearly 200,000 views, more than 4,000 likes and thousands of comments.
One YouTube account posting under the video claimed to have visited the Isle of Wight since the 1970s and “witnessed the decline” of the “special place”.
Another poster said they “instantly knew” that Sandown would be the island’s worst spot, stating that derelict buildings in the town “end up trashed by squatters”.
