Prince Philip: Windsor Castle visitor laments loss of Duke

Earlier today, Buckingham Palace announced that Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, had died aged 99. Marlene Ryan, an 81-year-old mourner who travelled to Windsor Castle this afternoon to pay her respects to the Duke of Edinburgh, broke down in tears during an interview. She had travelled from Ascot to Windsor Castle with her daughter Sally to lay flowers and pay her respects to Prince Philip, as well as leave a card of condolence for the Queen.

Speaking to LBC correspondent Rachael Venables, the elderly mourner broke down as she reflected on Prince Philip’s legacy.

She said: “We are very fond of the Royal Family. We have come to show our respect.”

Ms Venables asked: “How did you feel when you heard the news?”

Ms Ryan responded: “Very, very sad. I’m nearly 82, and he’s always been here.”

As Ms Ryan broke down, she continued: “I don’t know why I feel so sad – but I do.

“He has been a part of my whole life.

“He is one of those people, like the Queen, who you think will go on forever but of course they won’t.

“He has been such a huge support to our Queen.

“He was also a military man and I’m very fond of military men.

“My husband was a Royal Marine, my daughter’s husband is a Royal Marine.

“We always had huge respect for him.”

The sombre Buckingham Palace statement released around midday read: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

“His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.

“Further announcements will be made in due course.

“The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”
