Hero workmen smash Tube train window as carriage fills with smoke

Clapham Common: Tube passengers escape train filling with smoke

Hero workmen saved London Underground passengers from a smoking Tube carriage in dramatic scenes at Clapham Common this evening.

A video posted by Twitter user @jakesharp0108 showed the moment a carriage resting at the platform started filling with smoke, and quick-thinking workers smashing a glass window to free people trapped inside.

One man is seen chipping at a glass pain while people wait inside before the window pops out and people clamber onto the platform surface.

As the camera pans across the train, other passengers are seen following suit, with other windows shattering out of their frames.

While chaos erupted among the throngs of commuters, the signs above the platform read: “Emergency. Please leave the station immediately.”

The notice board also showed the time as the video was taken as 5.52pm, meaning the incident happened at the height of the capital’s rush-hour.

Towards the end of the video, some people are seen helping passengers as they attempt to squeeze through the narrow windows.

According to TFL’s Northern Line status checker, a fire caused severe delays.

The update read: “Northern Line: Severe delays due to an earlier fire alert at Clapham Common tickets are being accepted on London Trams, Southeastern, Thameslink and Buses via any reasonable route.”

Other commuters have described the moment smoke started billowing from the carriages this evening.

Twitter user @kyra_kaixin said there was a “strong smell of smoke” and that passengers were “panicking” as doors wouldn’t open.

They added: “Get out and multiple carriages have smashed windows and doors to get out/air.

“Not sure what happened but I’m not filled with confidence if there had been an immediate risk.”
