Heavy snow sweeps parts of UK after temperatures plummet to -6°C

Voters had to make their way through thick snow as they headed to the polls today after a spell of unseasonably cold May weather

Temperatures plummeted to lows of -5.5°C in northern Scotland last night, with hail, snow and sleet continuing to fall this morning.

Bitter conditions caused traffic chaos on the A9, at Slochd and Daviot in the Highlands, and a yellow weather warning was in place for much of the country earlier this morning.

Photos taken from the A720 and M8 showed heavy snowfall near Edinburgh just after 6am.

A Met office spokesperson said: ‘Snow penetrating to relatively low levels could cause disruption to travel at first this morning.

‘Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services.’

South of the border, people in parts of Yorkshire and the North East also woke up to snow this morning, although the sun is now shining through for many.

Meanwhile in the South, rain is expected to fall throughout the day and most of the week, with as much as 5-10mm falling in just an hour in some places.

But a mini-heatwave with temperatures of up to 20°C is expected this weekend as warm winds sweep in from the continent.

Met Office forecaster Alex Burkill said: ‘Sunday should be drier for most, with some showers in places, but in the south-east of England, temperatures could climb into the low twenties by the afternoon.

‘People should make the most of any dry or sunny spots, as it is unlikely to last and the rest of May will be unsettled and changeable for everyone.’
