Heatwave to continue before storms hit despite end of extreme heat warning

Sunworshippers shouldn’t pack away their suncscreen just yet as the nation is set for another day of scorching temperatures.

Despite England’s unprecedented extreme heat warning coming to an end on last night, temperatures are only set to fall slightly today.

Britons will still have a chance to soak up some last rays before storms replace sunny skies in parts of the country this weekend, as the heatwave will continue with mercury climbing towards 30C on Friday.

England saw its hottest day of the year so far on Tuesday after a temperature of 32.2C was recorded at Heathrow.

It smashed the previous record of 31.6C recorded just two days before, as temperatures hovered around the 30s mark throughout the week.

The sweltering heat prompted the Met Office to issue its first ever extreme heat warning for England to last until Thursday night when the heatwave was set to end.

Speaking about the extreme heat warning that was in place in England, Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said: ‘It’s an amber warning so it’s quite an extreme one, and it’s for extreme heat.

‘So whilst temperatures aren’t plummeting tomorrow, they are still going to be on the high side, it’s less likely to cause significant impacts like we’ve seen over the past couple of days.’

The heat warning remains in place in Northern Ireland, and speaking on Thursday night, Mr Burkill said: ‘Temperatures there could be even higher than today.

‘So for a few days we’ve had their highest ever temperature. It was beaten yesterday, it was beaten again today, and it could well be beaten again tomorrow.

‘So I think it could be four days within a week where they’ve recorded their highest ever temperature.’
