Heartbroken son killed himself after struggling with break up and lockdown

A grieving mum has paid tribute to her son who tragically killed himself after struggling with lockdown and the breakdown of a relationship.

Ryan Beighton, 23, died by suicide at home on September 13, 2020 after difficulties with depression through the coronavirus lockdown restrictions.

His mum Samantha Beighton said: ‘Ryan was caring, loving, witty and just so funny – he could always say something to make you laugh and he was so kind.

‘He lit up a room with his personality and put a smile on your face. He loved fishing and walking and he used to go up to Scotland and stay there walking.

‘Family was also really important to Ryan and he was very family-orientated.

‘He lived with me and a lot of our family live away so when they came to stay he would always make a point of seeing them and spending time with them.

‘He was always a big lover of cats and animals in general and just such a lovely person.’

Ryan, who is from Hornsea in Yorkshire, enjoyed practical subjects like wood work at school, and trained as an apprentice welder before going on to work with his mum’s partner.

He had close friends and was described as an ‘old soul’ – with many people he met thinking that he was more mature than his age.

‘Ryan was a good child and was close with his friends still who he met from the age of five,’ said Samantha.

‘He was always very mature for his age and people always used to ask how old he was and was surprised when I told them as they thought he acted older and got on better with older people.

‘He enjoyed darts and was very into his cars and bought an Audi S5 and owned a Ford Mondeo for work and then traded them both in for a Peugeot.’

But when Ryan came out of a relationship in November 2019, it took a toll on his mental health and he began to suffer from depression.

With help from his mum, he began taking medication and ‘turned a corner’ – getting back to his old self and went back to work.

But when the Covid-19 pandemic hit in March 2020, he was put out of work and he started to struggle with depression again.

He met a new partner in May last year, but the pair argued and split up just days before he took his own life.

‘It’s very hard to come to terms with the loss of Ryan and we will always miss him – he was my only child,’ said Samantha.

‘I’m in bits – 2019 was a really tough year for Ryan and he really struggled with his depression but at the start of last year he really seemed to be turning a corner and doing well.

‘But when the pandemic hit he lost his job and struggled to cope with all the rules that were put in place by the government like not being able to go out and even things like the one way systems.

‘I love him so much and miss him every day.’

Coroner Lorraine Harris gave a conclusion of suicide after an inquest into Ryan’s death.
