Heartbreaking promise William made to Diana about HRH title revealed amid Harry title fear
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have accepted that they are not to use the ‘Sussex Royal’ title once they officially step down as senior royals. In an official statement released last night, the couple announced that they will retain their HRH titles but will not use it, as they will not be working members of the Royal Family. Royal expert Ingrid Seward told TalkRadio host Mike Graham that Harry will not use his HRH title in the commercialised world, but only on the occasions he returns to the UK.
However, Mr Graham then suggested that taking even that away could be the “next step”.
This is not the first time a royal has had their HRH title hanging over their head.
After Diana married Charles in 1981, Lady Diana Spencer became Her Royal Highness, The Princess of Wales.
When she divorced Prince Charles in 1996, she had her HRH title taken away in the legal settlement, something which she was devastated about.
According to the Daily Mirror, the Queen was happy for Diana to keep her HRH tiles because she was the mother of the future King, but Charles insisted they were removed.
After the divorce she was known only as Diana, Princess of Wales.
This meant it was no longer necessary for friends or staff to bow or curtsy in her presence, and she would herself have to curtsey to her ex-husband, sons and minor royals.
She was so upset that she did not even talk to her mother, Frances, for months after she suggested that, perhaps, losing her HRH title was a good thing.
Frances Shand Kydd felt like her daughter Diana could make a fresh start without the weight of being a royal, but Diana felt differently.
However, her son William, who was just 14 years old at the time, came up with a plan to cheer her up.
In his book ‘A Royal Duty’, Diana’s butler and friend Paul Burrell claimed William promised to restore her title.
The young prince apparently said: “Don’t worry, Mummy, I will give it back to you one day when I am King.”

Mr Burrell claimed the conversation left Diana in tears.
In a heartbreaking turn of events however, just a year later Diana died in a car crash along with Dodi Fayed on August 31, 1997.
For William the breakup of his parents’ marriage was difficult, but it was made even more difficult because the ‘War of the Waleses’ played out in front of the world’s press and public.
Then, he and his brother Harry had to endure their mother’s awful death and walked behind her coffin for her funeral, while people who did not even know her wailed on the sidelines.
The most tragic part is that if Diana had not been stripped of the HRH title, there is a chance she may have been alive today.
Losing her HRH status meant she also lost the royal protection that came with it, which may have prevented her from being in a speeding car pursued by paparazzi on that fateful night.
There is currently an ongoing argument as to who will now pay for the security for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle now that they are living independently in Canada.
In their statement released today, they wrote: “It is agreed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will continue to require effective security to protect them and their son.
“This is based on the Duke’s public profile by virtue of being born into the Royal Family, his military service, the Duchess’ own independent profile, and the share threat and risk level documented specifically over the last few years.
“No further details can be shared as this is classified information for safety reasons.”
The security costs for Meghan, Harry and their son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor are estimated to be around £1million a year.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is believed to have assured the Queen that Canada would pay part of these costs, but a petition signed by 100,000 people highlights serious resistance to this in the Commonwealth country.
