LBC presenter Nick Ferrari dismissed Boris Johnson’s claim that those that are victims of crime will have a named officer to call who will immediately be on their side to support them. Mr Malthouse insisted this was possible, despite the logistical difficulties. Mr Ferrari insisted it was a headline-grabbing stunt, however, and a promise that could easily be broken.
Mr Ferrari said: “Your boss, Prime Minister Boris Johnson, said everyone who is a victim of crime would have a police officer assigned to that particular incident.
“Do you support that Minister?”
Mr Malthouse replied: “I do, in fact, it is already in, it is called the victims charter, we will be making statutory later this year.”
Mr Ferrari quizzed Mr Malthouse on the amount of police available in the country in comparison to crimes being committed.

He said there were 133,000 police officers available and there were a reported 5.4 million crimes committed last year.
He continued: “Minister that works out to be 41 crimes per officer, how is that to be managed?”
Before Mr Malthouse could fully answer, Mr Ferrari erupted at the Minister.
Mr Ferrari said: “It is nonsense, it is headlining grabbing stunt by a very prolific and proficient journalist.

“It has got the headlines, in reality, it boils down to a Mary Poppins promise or a pie crust promise, easy to make, easy to break.”
Mr Malthouse eventually replied: “You will have the right to a named officer.
“That officer may change from time to time because people will retire or go on holiday.
“But in the end, you know Nick, all policing is based on the relationship with the public.
“The most critical relationship is that with victims.”

Writing in the Sunday Express, Boris Johnson said: “This government is utterly dedicated to fighting and beating crime.
“I want to bring the same focus to national crime-fighting that we brought to London during my eight-year tenure as Mayor.
“Making this country safe is the single best and most effective way of levelling up – so that young people grow up in safer neighbourhoods everywhere.
“We need now to redouble our efforts, to continue to put more police out on the street, and to back them all the way.
“And we want everyone to know that if you are the victim of crime you have a named officer to call – someone who is immediately on your side.”
