Dr Amir Khan has jumped to the defence of Professor Chris Whitty, who has found himself at the centre of a storm after telling people to respect certain rules such as drastically reducing their physical interactions in a bid to defeat Omicron. After considering all the facts, including the high number of infection rates and subsequent hospitalisations, Mr Whitty urged Britons to avoid mixing with large groups and strangers. This has led to cancellations for the Hospitality sectors but their losses, he feels could be the NHS’s gains.

But politicians have ripped into Mr Whitty for disregarding the decision the government took about Omicron and refusal to go back on its word.

The Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies then provided evidence-based information about the risks attached to the new variant, maintaining that tigther rules are desperately needed.

The scientists argue that the introduction of more severe measures as soon as possible is imperative to slash the risk of harsher lockdowns in future, warning that the NHS could be overwhelmed again if things won’t look up anytime soon.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his Tories have so far resisted calls for more severe curbs to be reinstated despite growing pressure from SAGE.

Mr Johnson, potentially to save his face in Britain after a series of high-profile blunders recently, has so far sticked to his guns and refused to change his stance.

Dr Amir stated that the UK government’s Chief Medical Adviser was spot on with his speech on Omicron as he pleaded with people to “listen to him” because he is “absolutely right”.

In an interview with Nick Ferrari on LBC, he said: “I think Professor Chris Whitty got it absolutely right.

“And I know he’s come under some stick from Tory MPs as well.

“We ’ve got to listen to him, he knows what he is talking about.

“Reduce your social activities in the run-up to Christmas, wear a mask when you go out, particularly in indoor public spaces.

“Getting your boosters is really, really key and ventilate indoor spaces. If you are having a Christmas day gathering, and we’re trying to safeguard that, do make sure that indoor space is well-ventilated by opening windows regularly throughout the Christmas day gathering too.

The scientific advisers’ pleas to introduce new measures to stop the spread of the new COVID-19 Omicron disease have fallen on deaf ears with Mr Johnson, who is desperate to see his plans through for Britons to enjoy their Christmas after it was taken away from the last year.

The total number of Omicron infections in the UK has risen to 10,000 yesterday.

London alone has seen a dramatic COVID-19 increase by up to 500 per cent, with young people the most affected and the British capital the worst-hit area in Britain.

Mr Johnson is understood to be weighing up his options with the prospect of a “full lockdown” before Christmas not beyond the realms of possibility as the festivities are hanging in the balance.

Needless to say, Mr Johnson himself in an invidious position as his own Tory MPs and most Britons would arguably never forgive him such a last-gasp change of heart after standing his ground for so long.

Mr Johnson said last week that he would not “cancel events and close hospitality” giving people the green light to socialise and mix.

He added: “What we are saying is think carefully before you go. What kind of event is it? Are you likely to meet people who are vulnerable, are you going to meet loads of people you haven’t met before? And get a test.”
