Just Stop Oil protests have entered the 13th day, with demonstrators blocking roads around St George’s Circus, in Southwark today.

The demonstrators have sparked fury with their latest bout of action, stopping emergency vehicles and angering commuters, with one woman heard saying: “I have a disabled child who needs to get to school, just move now.” Motorists have also been driven to intervene, dragging activists out of the way.

The protestors have also frustrated police, with Metropolitan Police commissioner Sir Mark Rowley saying: “Every day more than 200 officers are policing these protests and over the last 11 days we have made 338 arrests. I am frustrated so many officers are being taken away from tackling issues that matter most to communities.”

Just Stop Oil has vowed to disrupt roads every day in October as part of its campaign against fossil fuels.

The group said: “This is not a one day event, this is an act of resistance against a criminal government and their genocidal death project.

“Our supporters will be returning – today, tomorrow and the next day – and the next day after that – and every day until our demand is met: no new oil and gas in the UK.”

A spokesperson for Just Stop Oil also said commuters have been “increasingly showing gratitude” however they acknowledge “people are also angry and frustrated”.

Now London Mayor Sadiq Khan is facing mounting pressure to act and enforce an injunction against protestors, which the Met Police cannot do without TfL or the relevant council’s agreement that demonstrators are causing “serious disruption to the life of the community”.

Speaking to the London Assembly, Sir Mark said he was “frustrated” his officers couldn’t be “more assertive” due to “the view that it doesn’t cause serious disruption.”

He said: “I know that there will be people who have a different view but if my officers are to make legal intervention they need to stand it upon some evidence that that is reasonable, and frustratingly that is the situation we are in.”

So should Sadiq Khan step in and end Just Stop Oil chaos?
