A letter filed to the US district court said the duke and Ms Giuffre had reached an out-of-court settlement.

It said Prince Andrew – who makes no admission of liability – would pay an undisclosed sum to Ms Giuffre.

He will also make a “substantial donation to Ms Giuffre’s charity in support of victims’ rights”.

A statement included with the letter said the duke had “never intended to malign Ms Giuffre’s character” and he recognised she had “suffered both as an established victim of abuse and as a result of unfair public attacks”.

Nonetheless, the reputational damage the saga has caused for the Royal Family has raised questions around whether the duke will keep his title. So, should Prince Andrew’s Duke of York title be taken away from him?
