The Queen had a profound impact around the world during her 70-year reign, as shown in the monumental Platinum Jubilee celebrations held in June.

Tributes to the monarch have flooded in from world leaders, celebrities and those who valued her as Queen, with the UK now in a national period of mourning.

Crowds gathered outside her various residences as the news broke on Thursday, with many leaving tributes of flowers and candles and sharing fond memories of the Queen.

The mourning period will end on the day of the Queen’s funeral, however, the royals will remain in mourning for seven days after the funeral date.

As this is the first death of a monarch in 70 years, the procedure for her subjects is being questioned with many calling for a bank holiday to celebrate the Queen.

Currently, the day of the Queen’s funeral won’t be a bank holiday and instead will be a national day of mourning. It will then be at an employer’s discretion whether or not to grant the day off.

However, many are calling for a bank holiday either the day of or the day after the funeral, depending on when it is.

Britons have already enjoyed an extra bank holiday this year to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, and thousands have been calling for the same to commemorate her life.

Twitter user @SkyDaveLeeds said: “Don’t cancel the Football fixtures, people need something to cheer them up and show their appreciation for the Queen, call a Bank holiday for the whole country instead.”

So with the UK in mourning, should Prime Minister Liz Truss create a bank holiday to celebrate the Queen’s life?
