Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s hotly anticipated documentary voicing their side of the story has now come and gone. Rife with bombshell claims, the series racked up over 80 million viewers within a week of the first three episodes airing. Despite the fact that the documentary was intended to set the record straight and let the world know what the Sussexes were really like, 92 percent of readers said the show failed to improve their opinion of the couple, according to a new poll by Express.co.uk.
Harry & Meghan – the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s personal account of their treatment at the hands of the monarchy – was released on Netflix earlier in December.
The series proved highly controversial for its allegations against the Royal Family, including accusations of racism towards Meghan and Harry claiming “lies were told” to protect his brother, Prince William.
Despite being a factual documentary, many have pointed to glaring inconsistencies within the show’s six episodes, from the fact that Meghan wasn’t aware of who Prince Harry was, to the notion that he was told he had to propose in the UK.
In the first episode, Prince Harry, who is fifth in line to the throne, promised to expose the “full truth” of what goes on behind closed doors. Buckingham Palace is yet to issue an official statement in response.
Amid the ongoing debate, Express.co.uk ran a poll from 7am on Friday, December 16, to 1pm on Tuesday, December 20, asking readers: “Has your opinion of Meghan and Harry improved since their Netflix show?”
Overall, 22,391 votes were cast with the overwhelming majority, 92 percent (20,616 votes) answering “No”, the docuseries hadn’t increased the pair’s standing.
Just seven percent (1,646 people) said “Yes”, they now held the couple in higher regard, while less than one percent (129 people) selected that they did not know.
In the hundreds of comments left below the accompanying article, readers pulled no punches in expressing their thoughts.
Username MarizipanMilly commented: “No chance! They’ve burned their bridges forever.”
Username johnmac wrote: “I don’t believe anyone can watch them…yet have their opinion of them improve. It makes no sense.”
Indeed, rather than changing their opinion of the royal pair for the better, most commenters agreed the documentary had done so for the worse. Username john nutt wrote: “My opinion of them has never been high and now it is rock bottom. Words fail me over Harry.”
Username oulton2 said: “My opinion of them has just got worse. They are just repeating a lot of what was said in that Oprah interview, which a lot of was proven as untrue. I find it very hard to have a good opinion of people that lie and try to destroy the reputations of good hard working people, let alone family for monetary means.”

Username Audumla was more direct, saying: “I can’t answer this poll because my opinion has changed but whereas I disliked them before, I now detest them.”
A few, however, came to the Sussexes’ defence, username lynniemarlow commenting: “Wonderful Netflix series Harry and Meghan! Refreshing to hear the truth and not be bound by protocol. Love this couple!”
Username smmd said: “These two deserve a medal for the courage they have displayed amidst obstacles the likes of which normal people would never be able to even fathom.
“Kudos to them for having the composure to march to the beat of their own drum, and not capitulate and be sucked back in due to fear and threats.”
It’s not only readers of Express.co.uk that have had their opinions about the royal couple shaken up. According to an Ipsos poll conducted between December 14 and 15, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have seen their popularity with the British public decline significantly in recent months.
Since September, Prince Harry’s favourability ratings have fallen 11 percentage points to 30 percent, while Meghan Markle’s have tumbled eight points to 24 percent.
On the other hand, despite the slew of criticisms levelled against them, the Royal Family maintained its stable 54 percent positive standing.
Nearly four in ten respondents to the same poll (37 percent) said they thought the couple’s docuseries provided an inaccurate depiction of events.
