Has COVID-19 turned 2020 into a TV triumph?
Before 2020, watching terrestrial TV live as it hit our screens was on the decline. With streaming services like Netflix dominating the broadcast landscape, the future of television was uncertain.
But a global pandemic, two lockdowns and a tier system later… TV viewing figures have reached a record high.
Some 27.5 million people tuned in to watch Boris Johnson’s address at the peak of the pandemic, followed by some light relief as viewers turned to all-time favourites Strictly, I’m A Celeb, and Great British Bake Off, which have smashed previous TV viewing figures by a mile.
On this edition of the Sky News Daily podcast, host Bethany Minelle is joined by Great British Bake Off runner-up Dave Friday, who shares the behind-the-scenes secrets of making TV during a pandemic.
Plus we chat to Sky’s arts and entertainment reporter Claire Gregory about why 2020 has been a saviour for British telly.
