Harvey Elliott: Injured Liverpool star gives football kit to boy in next hospital bed
Liverpool player Harvey Elliott has given his shirt and one of his boots to a boy in the hospital bed next to him after both were injured on the weekend.
Elliott was taken to hospital on Sunday after dislocating his ankle in Liverpool’s 3-0 win against Leeds on Sunday.
The 18-year-old midfielder went down under a challenge from Leeds’ Pascal Struijk, who was then sent off.
He received lengthy treatment on the pitch before being taken to Leeds General Infirmary.
North East Junior Football Club later tweeted that one of their U14 players, called Jacob, had broken his wrist during a game and ended up next to Elliott in hospital.
The club shared a picture of Jacob draped in the LFC player’s shirt, writing: “Today Jacob, who plays for our U14s Pumas, broke his wrist after a nasty fall.
“He ended up in hospital next to @HarveyElliotLFC who despite his own injury gave his shirt and boots to Jacob! Who also happens to be a @LFC fan! We wish you both a speedy recovery!”
Elliott was released from the hospital later on Sunday evening and will undergo surgery in the coming days.
He wrote on Instagram on Monday: “I’m of course absolutely devastated with what happened yesterday at Leeds, but have been totally overwhelmed by the love and support shown to me by the entire football world following the injury.
“Thank you so much to everyone who has reached out or sent messages to me and my family – it means so much to us. Also a massive thanks to everyone inside Elland Road for the reception you gave me immediately after it happened.
“I am now fully focused on my recovery and will give everything in my rehabilitation to be back out there as soon as I can. I know I have an incredible support network behind me at Liverpool and together we will get through this.
“To all of the Liverpool fans: your support means the world to me. I’m one of you and I can’t wait to be back faster, fitter and stronger to help the team in the future. You’ll Never Walk Alone!”
Liverpool said in a statement: “Harvey, his family and Liverpool FC would like to place on record their thanks to the paramedics and all the staff at Leeds General Infirmary for the care and treatment given.”
