Hartley-Brewer snaps at SNP MP with stunning point – ‘Can you not understand Brexit?’

TalkRadio host Julia Hartley-Brewer claimed Brexiteers and supporters of an independent Scotland wanted similar goals. SNP MP Angus MacNeil argued he wanted political independence from the UK to ensure the economic future of Scotland could prosper. He also refused to see the similarities between the idea of independence and those held by Brexiteers.

Ms Harley-Brewer said: “But is this a Victorian fantasy?

“One of the reasons I would certainly never try to stop or campaign against Scottish independence is, I see the urge of people to be free and rule themselves, determine how their own country is governed.

“What funding they want for schools or benefits or hospitals and what their foreign policy should be.

“These are fundamental human urges, the Scottish people want to independent.

“The British people as a whole, certainly the English and Welsh by a large majority, voted for Brexit.

“Can you not understand, as I, a Brexiteer can fully understand the urge for Scottish independence.

“Can you not understand the urge for British independence for the EU as well?”

Mr MacNeil replied: “The things you listed there, schools, hospitals and foreign affairs, they are all controlled by the UK so it is not the European Union who controls these things.

“The UK has independent control of all the things you listed so I can’t quite see the problem.

“We have got control over these things in Scotland but not the overall budget.”

The talkRADIO host hit back: “Ignore those things, just controlling our borders and all the other issues.

“Do you not understand that these are very similar urges and Brexiteers and SNP campaigners for an independent Scotland have actually got an awful lot in common.

“They shouldn’t necessarily be at log head.

“A Brexit happening may be your best chance of getting independence for Scotland.”

The SNP shot back: “Well Brexit causes economic damage. There is no Brexit that won’t result in economic damage. What we are trying to do is take back political control to make sure that we can make the political decision and choices that are best to enhance our economy.”

The TalkRadio host concluded that she was quite amused that someone wanting independence from a larger body could not see the parallels between themselves and Brexiteers.

It comes as Boris Johnson has stuck by his hard-line stance that Britain will leave the EU with or without a deal at the end of October this year.
