Harry's titles 'won't be handed to William instead in case it widens rift'
Prince William won’t be given Harry’s military titles when he is stripped of his patronages amid fears of causing a row between the two, royal insiders say.
The Queen is set to make a final decision on Harry’s future within the royal family ahead of the year-review of Megxit.
He and wife Meghan stand to lose all their remaining royal privileges, which sources have denied is related to the couple’s upcoming tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Harry, who is known to treasure his role of Captain General of the Royal Marines, is said to be ‘upset’ over the decision and wants to fight to retain his three military titles.
But a royal source said: ‘Ultimately, it’s the Queen’s decision. The posts are in her gift.’
Palace insiders fear reigniting a rift between the brothers if William is handed Harry’s titles.
Harry’s exit from the royal family is said to have cause tension between the siblings, with William accusing him of ‘betraying’ the Queen.
Cracks had begin to show even before the Harry’s bombshell announcement to step down from royal duties, with the Duke of Sussex admitting in an ITV documentary in 2019 that he and his brother ‘were on different paths’.
The Queen’s daughter Princess Anne is now widely expected to become the first female head of the marines, adding to her 33 honorary military titles.
Prince Edward is ruled out as he quit the force after three weeks of commando training in 1987.
One source told The Sun: ‘Who takes over from Harry is a thorny issue in the family so giving the Queen the final say is the right thing to do.’
Harry’s military titles were put on hold for a year when a Megxit agreement was thrashed out at a Sandringham Summit a year ago. The terms stipulated the position would be reviewed ahead of 31 March 2021.
Harry is set to lose his Royal Marines title, as well as his roles as Honorary Air Commandant of RAF Honington near Bury St Edmunds and Commodore-in-Chief of Small Ships and Diving.
It means he could be banned from wearing his treasured military uniforms at official engagements.
Finishing touches are being put in place for the couple’s future life outside the monarchy.
It is understood palace chiefs will make a public announcement several weeks before the March 31 deadline but their replacements will not be named until the summer.
It comes after the Queen’s husband Prince Philip spent a third night in hospital, with a report suggesting Harry is self-isolating in case he needs to rush back to the UK if his grandfather’s condition worsens.
