But many will be asking how he managed to lose his way in recent months and cause her so much distress. I do not have any doubt that he loved her deeply.

But surely he must have realised the pain she suffered as she saw him leave the bosom of the royal family and then fire potshots at the monarchy from their new home in California.

Knowing that she was 96 and increasingly frail it seems incredible that the couple had no plans to visit her at Balmoral during what was due to be a brief visit to Europe.

Now it is too late. It was only by chance that the Sussexes were in the country when she died but now they will undoubtedly stay on for the funeral.

Harry and the Queen shared a wonderful sense of humour when he was in a more carefree place. When the Queen first got a mobile phone she asked him to record a voicemail message.

It went: “Hey, wassup? This is Liz. Sorry I’m away from the throne. Press one for Philip, two for Charles and three for the corgis!”

The Queen’s private secretary Robin Janvrin got the shock his life when he heard it, but the Queen just laughed.

Harry talks to the Queen directly in the second moving part of the statement, telling her he is forever grateful for their first meetings, as a child and when he was in the army.

He calls her his Commander-in-Chief and the Queen was as worried about his safety in Afghanistan as she was about Prince Andrew in the Falklands – but equally as proud when he returned unharmed.

He remembers Her Majesty meeting Meghan and hugging her great-grandchildren Archie and Lilibet.

But the sad truth is that she met them only a couple of times and never got to know them. Again, why did he and Meghan keep their children away so long from the family who loved them?

Harry tells the Queen he will honour his father Charles as the new King, and let us take him at his word.

The walkabout with William and Kate, the moving statement and attendance at the funeral are all first steps towards healing the rift. But it will take deeds not words to convince us all that Harry’s motives are true.
