Harry Dunn's alleged killer now 'wanted internationally'
A woman accused of killing a British teenager is now ‘wanted internationally’, after Interpol issued a Red Notice for her arrest.
The parents of motorcyclist Harry Dunn, 19, were told by Northamptonshire Police that Anne Sacoolas, the wife of a US Diplomatic, could be arrested if she leaves the states. In an email to the victim’s family, the force said: ‘should she leave the USA the wanted circulations should be enacted’.
Mrs Sacoolas, 42, has been charged after allegedly knocking Mr Dunn off his bike while driving on the wrong side of the road near a US military base in Northamptonshire. She fled the country claiming diplomatic immunity and has not returned following the incident outside RAF Croughton on August 27, 2019.
The British government has intervened in the case, which has also seen President Trump unexpectedly offer Mr Dunn’s parents a meeting with Mrs Sacoolas, who is married to a US intelligence official.
His government rejected an extradition request in January, provoking international controversy and widespread outrage.
In the e-mail, Charlotte Charles and Tim Dunn were told the suspect is ‘Wanted Internationally’ and ‘should she leave the USA the wanted circulations should be enacted’.
The family have turned on the UK government over its handling of the case and want a judicial review into the Foreign Office’s handling of the case, accusing Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab of a cover up.
Mrs Charles labelled the development ‘important’ and said: ‘It’s been a terrible time for us.
‘We are utterly bereft and heartbroken and miss our Harry every minute of every single day.
‘I just want to urge Mrs Sacoolas to come back to the UK and do the right thing.
‘Face justice and maybe then our two families can come together after the tragedy and build a bridge.’
Family spokesman Radd Seiger added: ‘It renders her a fugitive on the run and it means that she would be arrested and returned to the UK the minute she attempts to set foot out of the USA.
‘Red Notices would not be served on valid diplomats. I would urge the authorities in London and Washington and Mrs Sacoolas’ legal team to come together now to return her to the UK to face the English justice system where she will get a fair trial.
‘I am sure that both families have suffered for far too long and it is time for her to do the right thing and come back.’
Reports have since suggested that Mrs Sacoolas is herself a senior intelligence officer for the US.
Last month, a staff member at the base allegedly crashed on the wrong side of the road near the place where Mr Dunn was killed.
A spokesman for the Crown Prosecution Service said: ‘In December 2019 the CPS authorised Northamptonshire Police to charge Anne Sacoolas with causing death by dangerous driving.
‘Our aim continues to be that Mrs Sacoolas stands trial in this country.
‘We will continue to do everything we can to seek to ensure that happens.
‘We are unable, however, to give any explanation of what steps may or may not be taken, because to do so may compromise operational effectiveness.’
