Harry Dunn news: Family heartbreak as US extradition request rejected

Ms Sacoolas the wife of a diplomat, was the driver of a car that on the 27th August of last year killed teenager Harry Dunn, after she was found to be driving on the wrong side of the road near RAF Croughton. Since then Ms Sacoolas has been staying in the US, where she has been granted diplomatic immunity and the grieving Dunn family has made a public appeal for her to return. The MP constituent for the Dunn Family, Andrea Leadsom informed the family that the extradition request had been denied.

On Friday Leadsom will meet with US Ambassador Woody Johnson in London to discuss the outcome.

Family representative Radd Seigar has said that the family are taking time to process the news and would react fully on Friday.

The news comes after Boris Johnson said that the chances of Ms Sacoolas being extradited were “very low”

The Foreign Office have previously stated that the Dunn’s family legal challenge is “entirely without foundation” after they launched legal action against Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab.

They alleged that Mr. Raab abused his power by granting Ms Sacoolas immunity.

In a previous interview with Sky News, the family’s lawyer Mark Stephens said the Foreign Office was “trying to intimidate the family from having their case scrutinised by the courts”.

The foreign office responded that they: “Invite (Harry Dunn’s family) not to pursue the proposed claim. In the event that the claim is issued, it will be defended, the application for permission will be opposed, and the Secretary of State will seek his costs for doing so.”

Mr Raab spoke to Sky: “The representative of the family is suing the Foreign Office and they’ve talked about a litigation strategy in the US as well.

“They’re crowdfunding for that purpose and we just cannot responsibly allow ourselves to be sued without taking the normal action in defending ourselves when the position that the representative and the family are pursuing in law is wrong.

“It pains me because I want to give them the solace of justice in this case.

“But we also need to protect the taxpayers’ money and the legal position that we set out, which is the correct one.

“So it’s very difficult, but that’s the position that we’re in.”

The family lawyer said: “I think the Foreign Office know they are in a weak legal position that is why they are piling all the pressure on to try to intimidate the family

Mr Dunn’s parents reacted with fury to the cabinet minister’s comments, with Radd Seiger – the family’s spokesperson – revealing they were “livid”.

He said: “If he is so concerned about taxpayers’ money in the litigation then he would come and talk to us to find a resolution, rather than risking having the taxpayers themselves having to pay a very expensive legal bill if the FCO lose.”

A crowdfunding campaign was set up by Mr Dunn’s family, on website GoFundMe, has raised more than £118,581 of its £150,000 target since being created last October.

On the page, it outlines: “This funding page is being set up to help the family and his twin brother Niall through these traumatic times and to build up a fund as the family embark on a campaign to search for Justice for Harry as the legal process unfolds.”

The GoFundMe page also provides supporters with updates of the Dunn Family’s fight for justice.

Yesterday the family spokesperson responded to a statement from US that said: “Road safety is a top priority for all our U.S. Visiting Forces and family members living in the U.K.”

Mr Seiger replied: “There is a blatant disregard for the safety of the community around the (RAF) bases as evidenced by the dozens and dozens of cases of fatalities and serious injuries arising out of driving on the wrong side of the road.

“The fact that they choose to run away after each one shows where they really are with all this.

“We have become accustomed to the US Government behaving in a lawless manner and gaslighting the public. Frankly, we are entitled to expect better of military leaders. Truth matters and this statement couldn’t be more untruthful if it tried.

“Harry’s parents remain open to a discussion with anyone of authority on the US side. We won’t hold our breath though. There has been a spectacular failure of moral leadership and courage on their part. They clearly can’t bring themselves to look at the parents in the eyes.”
