The Duke of Sussex claimed he was “not invited” on the plane that took several members of the Royal Family from southern England to Scotland as the Queen was dying on September 8. In a new, bombshell interview with US journalist Anderson Cooper for CBS, Prince Harry recalled arriving alone to Balmoral Castle, hours after his elder brother Prince William.
The Prince of Wales had travelled north of the border alongside Prince Andrew, Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex.
In an interview released on Sunday night, just hours before the official release of the Duke’s memoir Spare, Harry said: “I asked my brother… I said, ‘What are your plans? How are you and Kate getting up there?’ And then, a couple of hours later, you know, all of the family members that live within the Windsor and Ascot area were jumping on a plane together, a plane with 12, 14, maybe 16 seats.”
Mr Cooper then asked Harry whether he had not been invited to get on that plane, to which Harry replied: “I was not invited”.
Harry carried on remembering the momentous day, revealing he was welcomed at Balmoral Castle by his aunt Princess Anne.
At the time of his arrival at Elizabeth II’s beloved Scottish residence, the Queen had already died.
Harry said: “I walked into the hall, and my aunt was there to greet me. And she asked me if I wanted to see her.
“I thought about it for about five seconds, thinking, ‘Is this a good idea?’ And I was, like, ‘You know what? You can– you can do this. You– you need to say goodbye.’ Um, so I went upstairs, took my jacket off and walked in and just spent some time with her alone.”
