Prince Harry has described how he left the UK fearing for the life of both himself and his wife Meghan Markle.
As he prepares to release his new book ‘Spare’, Harry has spoken to ITV’s Tom Bradby about his life, including the death of his mother and his deteriorating relationship with his family.
During the interview, the Duke of Sussex explained how he feared for the mental health of himself and Meghan as their royal struggles intensified.
Reflecting on the moment his father King Charles told him about the death of Princess Diana, Harry said he didn’t want history to repeat itself with Meghan.
Harry said: “I never want to be in that position, part of the reason why we are here now, I never ever want to be in that position. I don’t want history to repeat itself. I do not want to be a single dad.
“And I certainly don’t want my children to have a life without a mother or a father.”
In the early stage of the interview, Harry speaks candidly about how the loss of his mother at such an early age impacted him.
In ‘Spare’, Harry recalls the night his father informed him of Diana’s death.
Harry said: “I began silently pleading with Pa, or God, or both, “No, no, no.” Pa looked down into the folds of the old quilts and blankets and sheets.”
Charles then said: “There were complications. Mummy was quite badly injured and taken to hospital, darling boy.” He always called me darling boy, but he was saying it quite a lot now.”
Harry then adds: “His voice was soft. He was in shock, it seemed. “Oh, hospital?” “Yes, with a head injury.” Did he mention paparazzi? Did he say she’d been chased? I don’t think so. I can’t swear to it but probably not.
Charles then broke the news: “They tried, darling boy. I’m afraid she didn’t make it.”
