Harry 'banned from wearing military uniform' at awards gala for force heroes

Prince Harry will banned from donning his military uniform at an awards ceremony next week.

The Duke of Sussex will be attending the Salute to Freedom gala onboard a warship in New York to award five war heroes with medals.

However, the war veteran will not be allowed to wear his military uniform due to him being stripped of his honorary titles – despite serving in Afghanistan twice with the British Army in 2008 and 2012.

The 39-year-old royal was stripped of his role as Captain-General of the Royal Marines, which was handed down to him by his grandfather Prince Philip.

The move was part of the final deal for him and his wife the Duchess of Sussex to step back as front line royals.

He also lost two other honorary military positions – Honorary Air Commandant of RAF Honington in Suffolk and Commodore-in-Chief Small Ships and Diving, Royal Naval Command.

This means he cannot wear the corresponding uniforms at official events.

Instead, the Duke will wear be able to pin his four medals on his suit to mark the special occasion.

The event will pay tribute to ‘those who have served in the US forces, defending America’, with the awards honouring those who have ‘demonstrated courage and perseverance in the face of great danger or personal struggle’.

He will celebrate five service members, veterans and military families living with ‘the invisible wounds of war’.

The organisation the Duke will be supporting focuses on breaking the cycle of poverty and homelessness through affordable housing and shelter, including permanent supportive housing for veterans.
