Harry and William’s ‘worrying’ banter caught in resurfaced video
Prince Harry jokes about Prince William’s ‘baldness’ in 2009
Video footage from an interview taken when Prince Harry and Prince William were in their 20s has resurfaced and royal fans are speculating iwhether the clips may have predicted the royal brothers’ current “rift”. The interview has royal fans debating if Harry and William are simply having some “childish banter” during the interview, or if the jokes may show some “red flags” that reflect their current troubled relationship.
Body language expert Judi James analysed the resurfaced video of Harry and William from 2009, in which the royal brothers are being interviewed about their careers in the Armed Forces at the Royal Air Force Shawbury station in Shropshire, England.
In Harry’s latest memoir Spare, the royal wrote that he and “Wily” shared a cottage together 10 minutes away from the Air Force base in 2009 and that it was their first time living together since being at boarding school together at Eton College.
In a resurfaced interview, journalists questioned the brothers about living together, to which William joked: “Well, bear in mind, I cook him and feed him basically every day. I think he’s done rather well.”
William continues, and jokes about Harry leaving his dishes in the sink and that he has to clean up after his younger brother, to which Harry smiles and said: “Oh, the lies.”
Judi James is a leading television expert in both body language and social behaviour and in an exclusive with the Express, she explained why it is common for siblings to “banter” with each other.
Judi said: “Banter can be a form of play-fighting among siblings, a way to establish pecking orders and to air complaints under the cover of humour.”
However, she claimed this clip of Harry and William might throw up “red flags” in her professional opinion. She went on: “Even in families it needs to be finely tuned and this video of William and Harry exchanging endless banter as they are interviewed about their experiences as helicopter pilots does seem to throw up several red flags in terms of not knowing when to stop or how far to go.”
She claimed the interview took place at a time that was a “crucial moment in their development as both brothers and men.”
During the beginning of the interview, Harry complemented William and said: “I think out of both of us, he’s definitely got more brains than me, we’ve established that from school” to which William rolled his eyes jokingly.
Harry then joked about his older brother’s “baldness”. William laughed and said: “Pretty rich coming from a ginger.”

Judi analysed this section of the interview and suggested: “Harry seems to try to praise his brother during their interview but when he speaks of William having ‘the brains’ William rolls his eyes in a dramatic gesture of rejection and exasperation.”
She claimed: “Harry sounds very earnest through much of this interview and although he happily competes in the banter too, it feels as though he would have liked some moments of grown-up seriousness and maybe a little respect for what he has achieved.”
The body language expert opined: “Their banter is childish. William’s ‘baldness’ is brought up, getting the response that Harry is ‘A ginger’. It’s easy to hear that this is a ‘comedy’ routine they have used as a way of trading virtual blows for years.”
However, Judi claimed the “muttered asides” during the interview are “relentless” and there are body language signals which suggest the joking “is going too far.”
The body language expert suggesyed: “At one point Harry stops smiling and folds his arms to signal he has closed down to talk seriously about his career but the demotion to teenager continues from William who refers to the way he will ‘cook and feed him every day’ and how Harry ‘leaves washing up in the sink’ and ‘snores’.
“This is William adopting a critical parent role, which tends to have the effect of pushing the ‘victim’ into a rebellious child state, especially if they are keen to be treated as an adult. It sounds fun and even fond, but the sentiments behind this banter appear worrying.”
Judi ended her analysis by suggesting the interview may have hinted at the royal brothers’ future relationship. She said: “With Harry keen to be treated and respected as a grown man and even a hero and William referring to him like a naughty child, the seeds of their current rift could easily be on display here.”
