The Duke of Sussex and Duke of Cambridge are expected to appear at the unveiling of Princess Diana’s statue at Kensington Palace next Thursday. However, the brothers’ tense relationship has reportedly continued since the Sussexes’ explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey earlier this year.

Historian and royal expert Robert Lacey has said the brothers’ reunion needs to involve some “serious talk” to help heal their relationship.

He told ITV’s Good Morning Britain: “Surely when they’re gathered together to honour their mother and what Diana stood for, that will be the time when we can hope for some sort of reconciliation and serious talk.

“Otherwise if they just appear together in public in front of the statue and there’s nothing more, I think we would rightly conclude that it’s a superficial gesture.”

Mr Lacey spoke about the brothers’ recent reunion at Prince Philip’s funeral in April and how their relationship has changed since the Oprah interview.

He said: “A funeral would be when you would hope brothers thinking of other things, honouring their grandfather, would come together.

“I’m not saying when they walked together across that courtyard it was fake.

“As we saw, Kate rather skilfully brought the two together, but apparently nothing came of it once they got inside.

“Certainly the reports they had a big family sit down were sadly denied on both sides.”

After Prince Philip’s funeral, the Duchess of Cambridge was seen talking to Harry as the royals left St George’s Chapel.

William and Kate then walked either side of the Duke of Sussex before the Duchess broke away appearing to let the brothers chat alone.

Harry and William’s reunion next week will be the second time the brothers have met face to face since the Oprah interview.

Harry told Oprah that he believes William is “trapped” in the Royal Family and said he is on a “different path” to his brother.

The Duke added: “The relationship is space at the moment. And, you know, time heals all things, hopefully.”

The statue of the late Princess of Wales commissioned by Harry and William is expected to be installed to mark what would have been her 60th birthday on July 1.

Princess Diana was tragically killed in a car crash in Paris in 1997 and this August mark 24 years since her death.
