Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been urged to stay away from King Charles’s coronation following their explosive Netflix series. A former Cabinet minister insisted the Duke and Duchess of Sussex “categorically shouldn’t come” to the event next May, while a historian said the couple should “stay holding hands in Hollywood”.

The calls come after the first three episodes of Harry and Meghan’s six-part Netflix series dropped on Thursday.

Former Tory MP and Cabinet minister David Mellor told the Mail on Sunday: “They shouldn’t come to the coronation. They categorically shouldn’t come.

“They make money out of selling their family down the river. I think it should be made clear that the British people do not want them there.”

Mr Mellor suggested that members of the public “would be perfectly entitled to boo if the couple did turn up”.

Historian Lady Antonia Fraser added: “I hope they don’t come because I want the King and Queen to be the centre of attention.

“It worries me that if they come the cameras might waste time on them. They should stay holding hands in Hollywood.”

The Sussexes, who are living in California after quitting royal duties, have sparked fury over their documentary.

As well as calls for them not to attend Charles’s coronation, they are also facing demands to be stripped of their royal titles.

Among the most incendiary claims in the show is from a contributor describing the late Queen’s beloved Commonwealth as “Empire 2.0”.

A palace insider told the Telegraph that it was a “good job” Elizabeth II “is not here to have to see this”.

Another royal source said: “Some of this is deeply offensive to all those in the Commonwealth, and of course the late Queen’s legacy.”

Another moment that has prompted a backlash is Meghan doing a demonstration of her curtsy to Harry’s grandmother.

The former Suits actress, who was sitting on a sofa as the Duke of Sussex looked on beside her, put her arms out wide and bowed her head down low as she recounted how she tried to greet the late monarch when they first met.

Gyles Brandreth, a friend of the Royal Family, told TalkTV: “It’s embarrassing, because it is mocking – and nobody curtsies to the Queen like that, and nobody would have advised her to do it that way.”

He added of Harry: “He would know that the bow, as it were, is a brief nod and the curtsy is to show respect for the sovereign, and in the case of the Queen – a lady in her 90s who actually had earned respect through a lifetime of service, and that was it.

“To do this sort of mocking thing is uncomfortable, but it is a cultural difference. It’s like you would do a curtsy if you were playing in Snow White.”

The final three episodes are due to be released next Thursday as the royals steel themselves for fresh Megxit revelations.

The show is part of the Sussexes’ lucrative deal with Netflix which they struck after stepping back as working royals in March 2020 for new lives of personal and financial freedom in the US.
