Diana’s announcement of her intention to effectively go into semi-retirement included a commitment to her sons, William and Harry, which used the phrase “the tradition into which they were born”. In her speech at the Headway Lunch in London on December 3, 1993, Diana said: “My first priority will continue to be our children, William and Harry. They deserve as much love and care and attention as I am able to give – as well as an appreciation of the tradition into which they were born.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s statement said: “We plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth and our patronages.

“This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter.”

Royal aides did not respond to calls yesterday.

Harry, 35, has spoken openly about his struggles to deal with his mother’s death when he was 12.

His anguish over her battles with the media have played a key part in his decision to step back.

It has also emerged that Meghan, 38, was fascinated by Diana when she was younger, even though she claimed in a TV interview when they got engaged she knew very little about who Harry was before she met him on a blind date.

Her biographer Andrew Morton wrote: “According to family and friends, she was intrigued by Diana not just for her style but for her independent humanitarian mission.”
