Harry and Meghan: ‘Love will save them’ – Diana’s aide on why history WON’T repeat itself
Speaking in ITV’s Meghan & Harry: An African Journey, Prince Harry opened up about his ongoing battles with his mental health and how he fears the same fate that met his mother could befall his wife, Meghan Markle. Harry spoke of his mother’s death as a “wound that festers” and said he “will not be bullied into carrying on a game that killed my mum”.
The candid interview sparked worry from palace sources and the public alike, concerned for the couple and their young baby.
But now, a longtime royal servant of Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, has spoken out about why this time, things will be different.
Former butler Paul Burrell said: “[Diana and Charles] didn’t have what Harry and Meghan have.
“They didn’t have love. And they love each other. It’s quite obvious when you see them together.”

Mr Burrell, 61, has become a frequent commentator on Diana and the royal family since leaving the palace after Diana’s death in 1997.
He decided to speak out again after watching Harry push back against media intrusion, which also includes several lawsuits and an emotional statement in which the Duke said: “I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces.”
Harry added he had been “witness to [Meghan’s] suffering for too long…to stand back and do nothing would be contrary to everything we believe in.”
Mr Burrell said the situation with Harry and Meghan will not end in tragedy as they are less vulnerable than Diana was after her divorce.
However, he said he does believe that Meghan and Harry have had a harder time than Prince William and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, as the latter’s fate is largely predetermined.
In the ITV interview, Harry was asked about the feud rumours between the brothers, and didn’t take the opportunity to deny them, just saying they have “good days and bad days”.
He said that “inevitably, stuff happens” as a result of “this family being under the pressure that it’s under.”
But he added: “We are brothers. We will always be brothers.

“We are certainly on different paths at the moment but I will always be there for him as I know he will always be there for me.”
Mr Burrell said: “Harry said that [he and William] are on different paths.
“I know what he means by that. William and Kate have a map in front of them. They’re headed for monarchy.”
He added that the Queen and Charles have left Harry to find his way.
He said: “There’s no guidance. There’s no support. There’s no rulebook.”
Mr Burrell said he hopes the couple don’t decide to follow through on the idea of moving to another country and living a quieter life.
He said: “I hope we don’t lose Harry and Meghan because they are a tremendous asset to the royal family, and to Britain.”
Kensington Palace declined to comment.
