Prince Harry and Meghan Markle thrill crowds in Germany

Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall have been spending time on the Balmoral estate in Scotland as the summer draws to a close. On Wednesday, the Duke of Rothesay — as he is known in the country — will visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of New Lanark, a purpose-built 18th-century mill village. Since it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, New Lanark has been conserved and promoted as a unique village, making it an award-winning visitor attraction.

Charles and Camilla’s time in Scotland comes towards the end of Queen Elizabeth II’s extended summer stay at her much-loved royal residence.

Her Majesty appointed her 15th prime minister, Liz Truss, this week at her Scottish home, marking the first time the traditional ceremony has been carried out at Balmoral.

Due to her ongoing mobility issues, the Queen was advised to stay at the castle, nestled in the highlands of Aberdeenshire, rather than travel back to Windsor or London.

The decision means that the monarch will not be in England for the visit of Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle, who returned to the UK on Sunday.

It is unknown whether the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will travel to Scotland to see the Queen.

The Sussexes reportedly declined an invitation to join Charles at his home on the Scottish estate — Birkhall.

Russell Myers, royal editor at the Daily Mirror, claimed the couple had thrown the Prince of Wales’ olive branch “back in his face”, adding people around the heir were finding the rift between father and son “deeply distressing”.

Speaking on last week’s episode of Pod Save the Queen, he referenced Meghan’s recent interview with New York-based magazine The Cut, during which she said: “Harry said to me, “I lost my dad in this process.”

Mr Myers said: “The very fact that Meghan says this quote… anyone who would tell you how the Prince of Wales loves his sons would say he loves both of sons equally.

“I know for a fact that he [Charles] has offered them [Harry and Meghan] a place to stay, he has produced an olive branch to them, he has wanted to bring them close, he has tried to make instances to see them and I just think it’s being thrown back in his face.”

He continued: “It seems as though Meghan has a completely unfortunate and destructive relationship with her own father.

“But it just seems particularly sad that Harry is, by his own accord or through conversations with his wife, going down that route.

“[He’s] destroying his relationship with his father because of how he feels, especially on such a poignant anniversary — the 25th anniversary of his mother’s death.

“That is deeply sad and I’m sure that the Prince of Wales and people around him are finding it deeply distressing.”

Since the article was published, sources close to the Sussexes have claimed Harry was in fact talking about Meghan’s father, not his own.

Harry’s relationship with his father is reported to have been strained since the Sussexes’ shock exit from the Firm and their subsequent bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, during which the Duke claimed Charles had cut him off financially and had stopped taking his calls.

Since then, both Harry and Meghan have taken a series of apparent swipes at the Royal Family.

Ahead of their return for the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June, Harry spoke to NBC’s Hoda Kotb about his earlier visit to his home country and reuniting with his family.

While he spoke fondly of his meeting with his grandmother, he dodged a question about his relationships with his father and older brother, Prince William.

When the Duke and Duchess of Sussex did return for the Queen’s Jubilee, tensions between the couple and other members of the Royal Family were reportedly still high.

Their current visit comes after Meghan’s explosive interview and ahead of the expected release of Harry’s tell-all memoir.

On Monday, the Sussexes embarked on their week-long visit to Europe for a series of charity events.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived in the UK on Sunday having travelled across the pond from their home in Montecito, California.

They began the week in Manchester at the One Young World summit, where Meghan delivered her first UK speech since leaving the Royal Family.

On Tuesday, the couple travelled to Germany for an event marking the one-year countdown until the next Invictus Games, which will take place in the city of Dusseldorf.

Harry and Meghan are expected to return to the UK on Thursday for their final public appearance — the WellChild Awards in London, where Harry will deliver a speech.

The couple are staying at their former royal residence, Frogmore Cottage, during their time in the UK.

It is understood they have no plans to visit William and his wife Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, who recently moved into their new home, Adelaide Cottage.

The four-bedroom property sits within Windsor’s Home Park and is just a short distance away from Frogmore Cottage.

Ahead of Harry and Meghan’s return, a Buckingham Palace source told The Daily Beast that Charles and William are “treating Harry with caution until his memoir, due out later this year, is published”.

The Duke’s memoir was expected to release in autumn of this year but has since reportedly been delayed by the publishers.

It has been said the book could be released in time for the Christmas season this year, but other reports suggest publication will be delayed further.
