Hancock says sorry for breaking social distancing over affair snog pictures
Matt Hancock has spoken out for the first time after pictures emerged of him kissing an aide.
The Health Secretary has refused to resign over the ‘affair’ but apologised for breaking social distancing measures.
He was caught on CCTV embracing Gina Coladangelo, a friend and unpaid advisor at the Department of Health, on May 6 when Government guidance said two people from different households should not hug.
Both Labour and the Liberal Democrats have called on Mr Hancock to leave his role, but he has insisted he intends to keep going.
His statement said: ‘I accept that I breached the social distancing guidance in these circumstances.
‘I have let people down and am very sorry. I remain focused on working to get the country out of this pandemic, and would be grateful for privacy for my family on this personal matter.’
Mr Hancock was due to attend a constituency event this morning in Suffolk but cancelled when the pictures were printed on the front of The Sun.
He had previously condemned scientist Neil Ferguson for breaking lockdown in March to meet with a woman, reportedly his lover.
