Hairdressers 'given green light to reopen on July 4' but with a few changes

Boris Johnson will give hairdressers the green light to reopen on July 4 amid the coronavirus crisis, it has been reported.

Hair stylists and beauticians have been eagerly awaiting instruction after pubs, cafes and restaurants were all told they could resume business next month. The Prime Minister is now expected to relax the two-metre social distancing rule next week, before allowing hairdressers to reopen.

The news will no doubt come as a relief to thousands of Brits who have either resorted to cutting their own hair or are in desperate need of a trim. However, UK scientists say precautions must still be taken, with a ban on food and drink inside salons still considered to be likely.

Hairdressers and barbers could also be asked to wear face masks while they work to decrease the risk of the infection spreading. Conversations with clients will also be ‘kept to a minimum’, to reduce the chances of cough droplets transferring through the air.

Any lengthy discussions about hair styles or colour could also only be done using the mirror, rather than standing face to face with the customer.

A Whitehall source told The Sun: ‘There’ll be a big rush to get an appointment when this is formally announced. It won’t be back to normal. But it’s an important step out of lockdown.’

The PM is current under increasing pressure to drop current social distancing restrictions to one metre, as restaurants, cafes and pubs prepare to open. Companies say it will be impossible for them to maintain their businesses if they are only able to allow a reduced number of people inside at any one time.

The Telegraph reports that Johnson will announce a new ‘one metre plus’ rule for all venues, including restaurants, schools and offices, on Tuesday. It will then be enforced from July 4, the publication states.

This will mean that people are allowed to be one metre away from each other, so long as they take additional measures to protect themselves, such as wearing a mask or meeting in an open space outside.

The change in rule would also allow eateries to host people on tables that are less than two metres apart.

Earlier this week Johnson hinted at plans to reduce social distancing rules, telling reporters to ‘watch this space’ as he visited a school visit in Hertfordshire.

He went on: ‘We will be putting in further changes as the science allows. I think that’s what the public also wants to see, they want to see us working with the reality.’
