King Charles III and wife Camilla will make their way to London today, after spending last night at Balmoral following the death of his mother, the Queen, aged 96. The journey will mark the first day of a national period of mourning, which Charles today said will extend for seven days after the Queen’s funeral, which is usually held 10 days after a monarch’s death.
Commemorations will be held across the nation today as Britain pays its respects to the incredible legacy of Queen Elizabeth II.
At midday, MPs will begin their tributes in the House of Commons, led by new Prime Minister Liz Truss, who met the Queen just days ago.
Ms Truss will then meet the new King for his first audience as monarch later this afternoon.
Church bells will also ring out across the UK in commemoration of the Queen, expected to take place at midday.
When and where is the gun salute today?
Gun salutes will take place at 1pm from London’s Hyde Park, with 96 shots to be fired – one for year of the Queen’s life.
The King’s Troop, Royal Horse Artillery is expected to fire the salute.
Gun salutes are traditional for royal celebrations and commiserations. The Royal Family website says: “On special days, such as anniversaries and birthdays, Royal salutes are fired from various locations in London and across the UK.
“In London, salutes are fired from the Tower of London, and also either Hyde Park or Green Park, depending upon the occasion.
“The basic salute is 21 rounds, fired at ten second intervals, but in Hyde Park an extra 20 are fired because it is a Royal Park.”
The most recent gun salutes will have bene held in June, to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee as she reached the incredible milestone of 70 years on the throne.
What else is happening today?
Charles is expected to meet the Earl Marshal, the Duke of Norfolk, to approve the schedule for the coming days.
He’ll then issue a televised address to the nation at 6pm, which will be pre-recorded, in which he’ll pay tribute to his late mother.
A service will also be held at St Paul’s Cathedral, attended by the Prime Minister and senior politicians.
