Grooming gang who used teenager 'as piece of meat' guilty of rape

Four men have been convicted raping a vulnerable teenager and passing her around like she was ‘nothing more than an object’.

The jury heard how between the ages of 15 to 17, the girl was treated like ‘a piece of meat’ by the men who used and abused her for their sexual gratification. The victim, now in her 20s, first told police about being raped in 2011, but police did not launch an investigation or record the complaint.

Nearly a decade later, Jasim Mohammed, 37, Nzar Anwar, 40, Kawan Omar Ahmed, 31, Shangar Ibrahimi, 30, were convicted of rape yesterday following a long-running trial of 10 men at Sheffield Crown Court.

Saba Mohammed, 41, of Sheffield was found guilty of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and five other defendants were acquitted or rape.

Peter Hampton, prosecuting, said the girl had a turbulent childhood, having been referred to social services at six and placed on the child protection register at nine.

The victim’s mother died when she was 13 and she was eventually taken into local authority care as her life ‘descended into chaos’.

Mr Hampton said: ‘She may as well have had a target on her back as far as those who were criminally minded were concerned.’

He said the girl, who grew up in East Yorkshire before moving to South Yorkshire, was ‘effectively and efficiently groomed’ by a 19-year-old woman called Amanda Spencer, who introduced her to men who would go on to rape her.

She went on to receive jail sentences totalling 15 years after trials in 2014 and 2017.

Mr Platts said: ‘It is difficult to put into words the damage and impact of sexual exploitation on children, but I hope that by hearing this brave woman’s account, other victims of this awful crime find the strength to come forward and tell someone what has happened or is happening to them.’

Detective Inspector Rob Platts, said: ‘I commend the victim, now a woman trying to rebuild her life, for her bravery in coming forward and speaking to police about the horrific abuse she faced.

‘She had to recount incredibly traumatic incidents of sexual abuse and exploitation in front of the jury over several days, and it is testament to her bravery that she elected to do this in person. I am so pleased her voice has been heard.’

Jasmin Mohammed, from Sheffield, was found guilty of three counts of rape, Nzar Anwar, 40, also from Sheffield, was convicted of one count of rape and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

Kawan Omar Ahmed, 31, of Margate Drive, from Sheffield, was found guilty of two counts of rape, Shangar Ibrahimi, 30, of Cemetery Road, Barnsley, was convicted of one count of rape.

Usman Din, 35, Tony Juone, 61, Kamaran Mahmoodi, 37, and Saman Mohammed, 41, all from Sheffield, were all cleared of all offences.

Farhad Mirzaie, 29, from Sheffield, who previously pleaded guilty to drug offences, was also cleared of rape.

All those convicted are due to be sentenced on March 13.
