People fed up with sending their children to play in a dilapidated playground have compared it to Chernobyl.

With grass growing through its concrete floors and apparatus stripped of paint, the run-down recreational area may be one of the least appealing in Britain.

The rusted structures are kept behind a metal fence that looks more suited to housing animals.

It hasn’t gone unnoticed among people living in the area that the whole thing has a whiff of the nuclear wasteland about it.

One resident of Chelmsley Wood in Solihull said the park in Pripyat – the town devastated by the 1986 nuclear explosion – is in better condition.

Another said: ‘That awkward moment when we became Chernobyl Wood overnight.’

Kristina Richards McdonnelI wrote: ‘I played on that 30+ years ago, I think it’s the same paint.’

One commenter called it ‘Armageddon’, while another said ‘we always call this apocalyptic park’.

Diane Beresford said on Facebook the condition of the park is ‘absolutely disgusting’ and that the ‘whole estate needs cleaning up’.

The large housing project lies about eight miles east of Birmingham city centre.

Efforts to rejuvenate Chelmsley Wood have been troubled, with new residents claiming the area is ‘falling apart because of vandalism, BirminghamLive reports.

One resident claimed the park was more likely to be used as a lavatory than a play area.

She told local news: ‘On a regular basis, we get kids weeing in the park. We have on a regular basis kids using the park as a toilet.

‘Some of the residents get name-called and it’s not nice. That’s kids being horrible.’

Solihull Council is planning to redevelop the area with 200 news homes.

But those plans have been met with scepticism from some locals who’ve pointed out the park often floods.

Laura Parker wrote: ‘I’ve seen that park completely flooded by the river .. I wouldn’t fancy buying a house there .. not unless you want to wear wellies in the lounge.’

Metro.co.uk has contacted Solihull Council for comment.
