Greta Thunberg is ‘dangerous’ and her plans are ‘only going to hurt people’ says caller

Stewart from Essex argued against the 16-year-old Swedish activist receiving a Nobel Peace Prize. His comments come as thousands of Extinction Rebellion protestors have gridlocked London demanding action on the climate crisis. Speaking on the Jeremy Vine show, Stewart said: “I don’t think Greta should be put up there with the likes of Nelson Mandela because of two big problems for me in her speech.

“The fact she talks about us being on the verge of extinction, we’re clearly not.

“The economic growth which she said is such a bad thing is needed to help people in developing countries.

“In cutting carbon admissions in the aggressive way that people are suggesting are only actually going to hurt people in those developing countries, not us.”

Mr Vine interjected and said: “We’re got nearly 10 billion people on the planet now and if everyone in China gets a fridge, we’re finished but who are we to stop them”

Stewart added: “The massive problem is the message she is putting out is absolutely the wrong one.

“The recent IPCC report doesn’t even agree with what she says so it’s completely wrong.

“Does she deserve to be put in there with Nelson Mandela? Absolutely not.”

Bookmakers’ have Ms Thunberg as a girl favourite to win the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday and become the youngest ever laureate but some experts believe her youth could count against her.

If she wins, the 16-year-old climate activist, who went from anonymity in her native Sweden to leader of a global movement in little more than a year, will join the likes of Nelson Mandela, Jimmy Carter and Mikhail Gorbachev.

Henrik Urdal, director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo, was among those who expressed doubts, saying the prize committee would have to consider the impact the honour would have on such a young person and could award it jointly.

Mr Urdal said: ”She is relatively young and the committee, if they are considering her candidacy, might want to share the attention and the burden.”

Another caller on the Jeremy Vine show also argued she shouldn’t receive the prize.

Sam from London said Ms Thunberg has been protesting without sacrifice and has done nothing of merit.

Sam said: “She’s done nothing of merit. At the end of the day, she’s lived a privileged life, she got on a boat and sailed across the sea.

“Most 16 year olds that I know would go and do that for any cause.

“Every time I see her she’s got a new outfit on. I don’t see her making any sacrifices herself.”
