Gisela Stuart lifts lid on Dominic Cummings’s ‘REAL’ relationship with Boris Johnson

Once described as a “career psychopath” by former Prime Minister David Cameron, Mr Cummings appears to have become the most powerful unelected political figure in the country. He came to the fore as a special adviser to Michael Gove in 2007. He then attracted further attention as the chief administrative mastermind behind the successful Vote Leave campaign in the 2016 EU referendum.

When Boris Johnson became Prime Minister in July 2019, Mr Cummings was installed as his chief aide, directing operations from Downing Street.

He can largely be credited for the Conservative Party’s triumph in the December 12 general election and for delivering Brexit.

In the last couple of months, though, the Brexit guru has attracted a lot of criticism.

He has been more than once accused of being “unkind” and treating Downing Street staff badly.

However, in an interview with Express.co.uk, former Labour MP and Vote Leave insider Gisela Stuart rejected those claims and lifted the lid on Mr Cummings’ personality and relationship with Mr Johnson.

She said: “Dominic Cummings is someone who always challenges views. He used to contest our views in Vote Leave all the time.

“He is someone who likes a rational approach to things and testing.

“Every institution, every Prime Minister needs that.

“That is his role, and as I said before, I found Dominic Cummings a force that helps you make good decisions because he challenges you.”

The former Labour MP said: “The relationship he had with Michael Gove and Boris Johnson.

“I never had the impression he was telling them what to do.

“They were always joint decisions.”

Former Ukip MP and prominent Brexiteer Douglas Carswell echoed Ms Stuart’s comments about Mr Cummings in another interview with Express.co.uk.

He said: “I have known Dominic very well for over 20 years.

“He is incredibly driven, motivated and incredibly bright.

“He has a clarity of thought that very few people in politics possess.

“I only ever saw – and I saw a lot of Dominic during the Brexit referendum campaign – talking to people with great respect.

“More than that, he was actually someone who was reassuring to the team and staff.

“Even at times, when things were looking pretty bad.

He added: “I spent a lot of time on the bus with Boris, Michael Gove and Gisela Stuart.

“I know Dominic was close to Michael, but then Michael and Boris had a falling out throughout the campaign.

“But that’s all forgotten now.

“I’m guessing that in politics there are tensions that people don’t always see, but from what I saw, everyone seemed to get on really well.”
