General Election 2019: Student vote scandal – girl says she will vote TWICE and urges othe

The Tweet has exposed the issue of voting twice and the problem in the current electoral system. It is feared the girl is just the tip of a criminal ice-berg which will see thousands of students voting twice in the 2019 election. ‘Lucy’, 23, wrote to other students on Twitter: “I have just re-registered for both my hometown and uni address . . . in under 120 seconds! If you live at a second address . . . add it to the register and you can vote twice. Register twice. be brave.”

The Daily Mail found her Tweet which has since been deleted and changed her name to ‘Lucy’ to pretect her from online trolling.

Slightly bafflingly the official rules are that you are allowed to register to vote twice, once at home and once at university but you must only vote in one of these places.

Voting twice in a general election is a serious criminal offence.

The Electoral Commission warned after the 2017 election that students could have voted twice in the general election.

Some students admitted that they voted twice for Labour in the 2017 election.

A 21-year-old pleaded guilty to voting for Labour twice in the general election.

After pleading guilty, Mohammad Zain Qureshi, was fined £150, ordered to pay £200 towards prosecution costs and also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £30.

The watchdog received over 1,000 complaints and letters from dozens of MPs alleging that voters cast two ballots.

The system relies on paper lists being distributed to polling stations making it possible for students to vote twice.

Labour’s Cat Smith, the shadow minister for voter engagement and youth affairs, said: “We agree with a number of the key recommendations put forward by the Electoral Commission. Double voting is a serious crime and it is vital that the police have the resources they need to bring about prosecution.

“However, we urge caution when looking at measures to tackle this issue – a blanket ban on being registered at two addresses would exclude those who for reasons of work or study need to be registered in two places. This cannot be an attempt to make it harder for young people and students to register to vote.”

The snow could affect the outcome of the election, which would still go ahead.

Voters must register 12 working days before an election so the deadline would be November 26.

The Electoral Commission has estimated that between 8.3 and 9.4 million people in Great Britain who are eligible to be on the local government registers are not correctly registered.

Cat Smith MP, Labour’s Shadow Minister for Voter Engagement and Youth Affairs, responding to the latest estimate by the Electoral Commission that up to 9.4 million were not correctly registered to vote, said:

“A million more people than previous estimates are not registered to vote correctly – that is absolutely shocking.

“The Tories know that when lots of people are registered to vote, they are less likely to do well in elections, which is why the government has done nothing to address this unprecedented democratic crisis. The Prime Minister even tried to fix the date of when a general election might happen to make it harder for students to take part.

“Ahead of the most important General Election for a generation, it’s vital that every eligible voter can have their say, which is why Labour’s social media teams and our army of activists on the doorsteps will be working hard to increase voter registration.”
