Fury as Labour mayor of seaside town REMOVES Union Jack flags raised to celebrate Brexit

However, Conservative MP Derek Thomas of the St Ives constituency which contains Penzance said he saw “no harm” in keeping the flags. Speaking to Cornwall Live Brexiteer Mr Thomas said: “I think there’s no harm in it whatsoever and this should be about freedom of speech. I appreciate the town council looks after their property, including the flags on the promenade, but there should be some acknowledgement that we’ve left the EU.

“I can see no problem with the Union flags and it’s a shame the mayor has seen the need to comment.

“The council could have taken them down quietly.”

Mr Thomas added: “I don’t have an office anymore.

“However, if I had one I’d be happy for flags to be put on it.

“It’s our flag, our identity, and important to recognise that we’re now a sovereign state.”

The Cornwall Live Facebook page has received over 550 comments on the subject so far.

Nicole Broadhurst, the Labour mayor of Penzance, sparked fury among locals by taking down the 18 Union Flags that were raised in the town.

The mayor claimed the flags were “unauthorised”.

Within 24 hours after the flags were erected on January 1, they had been removed, leaving the poles empty.

Cornwall Council, which owns the flagpoles, did not authorise the mounting of the Union flags.

Now there are calls for Ms Broadhurst to be removed from her official role.

Hundreds of people have signed a petition calling for this to happen.

The flags were raised along the town’s seafront to mark the end of Britain’s union with the EU.
