People took to social media to express their sheer anger at the 21-year-old Loughborough University student who appears in a flak jacket and headphones as he films himself amongst desperate Afghans who scrambled for seats on the flights in order to escape the Taliban. Mr Routledge has been branded “selfish” and told to “stay there” by members of the public for visiting Afghanistan in the first place while others condemned the student from Birmingham for “taking up a seat” on the flight out of the country which could be “given to a woman or child” as thousands of men, women, children, and interpreters who helped the US and British army are left behind to face the mercy of the brutal Taliban.

Mr Routledge shared the video on his Facebook page to share the news he had been evacuated out of the country, he wrote: “I’ve landed in Dubai thanks to the brilliant people at the British Army. All safe!

“Got Evacuated at 4ish (it’s 2am now) with 100 or so other civilians, couldn’t message as there were cars emitting signals that would set off bombs, it blocked my AirPods from connecting so I think it blocked all wifi/data.

“The Taliban let us go through the airport and we met many of them, very long transition period but everyone was smiling and waving at one another, some took selfies with them. I slept on a dirt/gravel road and woke up as cars went by. We’re in a new safe house and we’re all hydrated, happy, and ready for a few hours of sleep.”

Shortly after he posted an update, adding: “On the flight out we aren’t allowed any liquids at all, no razors and only 1 bag up to 10kg so everyone is tossing all their belongings into a pile. People are donating each other their items because they can’t carry them.

JUST IN China and Russia ARE backing Taliban, says spokesman in bombshell interview

“Some lads stuffed my body armour and bag with protein bars, over 20 of them. Very happy man (right now). Thank you lads.”

But his comments have sparked a ferocious backlash from Brits who cannot believe how reckless and foolish Mr Routledge’s behaviour has been.

One person fumed: “So you took the place on an evacuation flight from someone who is now left behind with their life in danger – well done you must be so proud of yourself.”

While another raised a serious question, asking: “And to think, he took the place for an innocent Afghan woman. How will he EVER live with that fact?”

And another person commenting on the video did not hold back either, they slammed: “Selfish actions, your seat on a plane home should have been given to an Afghan interpreter who now faces certain death.”

While a fourth slammed: “You’re an idiot. I’d stay there if I were you. Think there’s quite a few people back here that would like to give you a damn good slap for being so thick!!!”

The physics student who calls himself a “Lord” touched down in Afghanistan last Friday, August 13, for what he claimed was “a holiday” as he enjoys “dark” tourism.

Fury has grown further at the student following the news that there are an estimated 56,000 people who need evacuating from Afghanistan to western countries.

It comes as the UK’s evacuation operation is being overseen by members of the Army’s 16 Air Assault Brigade working with RAF pilots and using UK bases including Brize Norton in Oxfordshire.

According to Sky News, a total of 370 people were flown back on Monday and the day before.

The Taliban made lighting gains in the country in the last few months as Afghan leaders and the army fled their posts as the Taliban gradually regained control after 20-years of western intervention in the country.

On Monday evening, amid chaotic scenes at Kabul airport as thousands of desperate Afghans attempt to flee the country, President Biden took no responsibility for the chaos and blamed the collapse of the country on President Ashraf Ghani and the Afghan army who he claimed “did not want to fight for their future.”
