Furlough scheme extended as England enters second national lockdown

The furlough scheme will be extended to support businesses that have to close for a month under the second national lockdown.

Boris Johnson confirmed that Government will pay 80% of wages who will be out of work as a result of the new measures.

The PM confirmed today that the country will be plunged into a national lockdown on Thursday,

Schools and essential shops will remain open but all other businesses will have to close.

Mr Johnson said in a televised news conference on Saturday that the new measures will begin Thursday and last until Dec. 2.

He said without them, ‘we could see deaths in this country running at several thousand a day.’

Bars and restaurants can only offer takeout, non-essential shops must close and people will only be able to leave home for a short list of reasons including exercise.

Unlike during the U.K.’s first lockdown earlier this year, schools, universities, construction sites and manufacturing businesses will stay open.
