Furious Irish farming chief says PM’s ‘crazy’ Brexit deal like ‘putting lipstick on a pig’

The Irish Farmers Association President Joe Healy slammed Boris Johnson’s Brexit plan to the EU. Mr Healy argued that Mr Johnson’s proposal of having two borders was simply “moving the goalposts” and not dealing with the issue. He insisted that if a Brexit deal was done with Irish farmers in mind it would be good for farmers across the UK.

Mr Healy said: “It is crazy.

“We have described it as akin to putting lipstick on a pig.

“It doesn’t do anything, it just moves the goalposts and it does nothing for the fears and concerns of Irish people and particularly Irish farmers.”

The BBC host countered by saying that Boris Johnson’s latest Brexit plan is getting more support within Parliament as a more stable way to deliver Brexit.

Mr Healy replied: “What do we ask for?

“Do we want a no deal Brexit or any sort of a deal or a good deal.

“Even from a farmers point of view, and we have a very close relationship with our colleagues in the national farmers union for England Scotland and Wales.

“We are very clear that a deal that is good for farmers in any of our country Ireland is good for farmers in other countries as well.”

The Farmers Association President was then asked to explain what this deal would like for Irish farmers.

He answered: “It really is just moving the goal post.

“It is moving the border a few miles further from where the border is.
