Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford was accused of “banning fun” as his government limited six people to meeting in pubs, cinemas and restaurants. Just 30 are allowed at indoor events with 50 people at those outdoors.

Two-metre social distancing is required in offices and nightclubs have had to close.

The measures forced the cancellation of Boxing Day dips at Pembrey Country Park, Carmarthenshire, and Llandudno. The North Wales resort’s Lions Club said: “While this is a blow to the fundraising efforts of the club, we must make sure we comply with advice given to us.”

In Scotland, outdoor event attendances have been limited to 500 but some Celtic fans in Perth watched from a hill as their side beat St Johnstone 3-1.

They had a banner saying “**** the SNP” but were later dispersed by police.

From today, up to three households can meet with a one-metre distance between groups at venues like bars and restaurants, Table service has also returned.

Northern Ireland also brought in restrictions on Boxing Day and today, with indoor standing events no longer permitted and nightclubs closing.

Socialising should be reduced to three households but no more than six people ‑ or 10 from the same household ‑ can meet in pubs, bars and restaurants. Only table service will be available.
