Freezing rain and ice could hit London this weekend after polar blast
Temperatures in London hit a freezing -5.2C last night – and the cold snap isn’t over yet.
There is a risk of ice and freezing rain into the weekend, with the possibility of more weather warnings being issued.
Last night, the mercury dropped to -5.2C in Northolt and -3.8C at Heathrow, while more centrally in the capital, it was -1.8C in St James’s Park and -2.6C in Kew Gardens.
Tonight won’t be quite as cold, but is still expected to be below zero. St James’s Park will be around -1C.
Oli Claydon, from the Met Office, told Metro.co.uk: ‘It will be another freezing night tonight, but probably not quite as chilly.’
Over the next few days, we probably won’t be seeing more snow in London except for perhaps a few scattered showers.
‘Generally speaking for the South East it’s a drier spell,’ Mr Claydon said.
‘The main focus for any snow is now in Eastern Scotland over the next couple of days.
‘In the South East there will even be some brightness at times, but there’s a bit of a change coming as we move through the weekend.
‘It will probably stay dry through Saturday, but on Sunday there’s a front moving in from the west which will bring the change to milder conditions which we will see through next week.
‘There might be the odd flurry of snow but there’s a greater risk of freezing rain come Sunday afternoon, which the uncertainty is still high around.
‘There may be some ice warnings issued for Sunday, so keep an eye out for that.
‘But the main risk for the South East will be rain as we go through Sunday afternoon into the evening.
The Met Office has also issued a new yellow warning for snow and ice for Saturday, which covers Wales, the West Midlands, Northern Ireland, the North West of England and Scotland.
It warns power cuts and travel disruption may continue, and some rural communities could become entirely cut off by snow.
