Fourth of July fireworks explosions kill at least two across US
Fireworks explosions from Fourth of July celebrations killed at least two people in incidents across the US.
A 43-year-old woman died and nine others were injured when fireworks exploded at a private show in Park Township in western Michigan just after 11pm on Monday, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office told WZZM.
The woman, who has not been identified, was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene after life-saving measures failed. The nine others were transported to a hospital with ‘injuries ranging from minor to critical’, the sheriff’s office said.
Multiple homes and vehicles were damaged, a car windshield was shattered and fireworks and debris were strewn across a front lawn, pictures from WOOD-TV show.
Witnesses said that 60 to 80 people attended the celebration on the eve of the Fourth of July, according to News 8.
The cause of the explosion was not immediately determined and is under investigation.
In another incident in Texas, sheriff’s deputies responded to a massive fire at the Firehouse Nine Farm Event Venue around 10.30am on Tuesday, Independence Day.
Deputies found Jared Scott Maddox, 58, of Gilmer, dead. Four others were injured as ‘fireworks explosions and other volatile incendiaries’ caused a home to catch on fire, according to the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident occurred as people were finishing prepping about 300 three-inch firework shells.
‘Evidence and witness statements indicate that the electric match that feeds a shell caused the explosion,’ stated the sheriff’s office, according to ABC News.
Additionally, three people were hurt in a fireworks explosion on a homemade barge in New Jersey on Monday, said the Byram Township Police Department, according to CBS News.
Two men were also injured by fireworks on Sunday. A 58-year-old Illinois man had a commercial-grade firework explore in his face, said the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. An Indiana man was injured when a firework ‘launched into his vehicle’, according to the Bargersville Fire Department.
Roughly three-fourths of injuries related to fireworks last year happened in the month around the Fourth of July, according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission in June.
In 2022, there were 11 fatalities linked to fireworks and 10,200 injuries, per the commission.
