Four people have signed petition for Dominic Cummings to keep his job

A petition set up for Dominic Cummings to keep his job has not got many signatures.

More than 250,000 people have already signed a petition calling for the prime minister’s chief adviser to be sacked after he drove 260 miles from London to County Durham to his parents’ house during the lockdown.

But another one calling for him to stay hasn’t been as successful.

So far the ‘Dominic Cummings should KEEP his job and NOT be sacked’ petition has struggled to get more than ten signatures.

The change.org page states: ‘This man has done so many good things for our country that people seem to quickly forget.

‘So, sign this petition to stop Dominic cummings being sacked.’

Cummings has refused to resign over the issue.

He denied he did anything wrong and told reporters he needed to ensure he had childcare for his son and behaved ‘reasonably and legally’ in doing so.

Cummings restated these points during a press conference at Downing Street this afternoon.

Cummings travelled to County Durham in March to self-isolate with his family while official guidelines warned against long-distance journeys, apparently because he feared that he and his wife would be left unable to care for their son.

Further reports also suggested he took a second trip to the North East in April, having already returned to London following his recovery from coronavirus, a disease which has seen more than 45,000 people in the UK die after contracting it, according to the latest available data.

Cummings denied the fresh allegations, which were reported by the Observer and the Sunday Mirror, and Mr Johnson declared he would be standing by his most senior adviser.
